Green with Wings!

Anyone know what this is? This is the main dragon Toothless from the movie "How to Train Your Dragon". This is a green one and looks a bit strange because I made it from felt. Why green? It was the colour of felt that I had the most of. And yes, this is the "green, with wings" thing I was referring to in my last post. You can't really see it in this picture, but one leg is a bit fatter than the other leg.. I tried my best though! Aside from that I thought I did a pretty decent job at making it look like what it was supposed to, although it looks more like a frog now 'cause of the green colour. I gave this to Michael in the end because he was the one who requested for it. Any other requests for me? (Yes Li~ What would you like?)

Chocolate Felt Cake

Here is the picture of the felt cake that I made right after my final exams ended back in April. I was bored out of my mind for a couple of weeks before summer school started. So aside from learning driving with my dad, I worked on this cake as well as another project that I will post at a later time. (*hint hint* It's green and it has wings~) My mom really likes this cake so I'll be giving it to her when I go back to see her this summer. Hoping to find the time to work on more cakes in the near future. The plan is to make a cake box, but first I'll need a box. Or maybe I should try chocolates. Anyway, that's all for now. Back to more midterm studying!

D+ Natural Yeast Bread

This interesting looking bread is a D plus natural yeast bread. Why is it called D plus? In Japanese, the D is pronounced "day". So it's a "day plus" bread. This bread is well known for having a long shelf life and can last days beyond other breads. I thought that was really interesting and after further research by my sister, she told me that it can apparently have a long shelf life with no added preservatives because of the special way that it is prepared. Also, every bread comes with a green pad known as an "alcohol pad". This is also supposed to help extend its shelf life.

So the flavor that my sister and I got was chocolate. The other 2 flavors available were red bean and cheese. On the official D+ website, there are 8 available flavors. In addition to the ones already mentioned, there is Hokkaido cream, maple, melon, blueberry and pumpkin.

The bread tasted extremely soft and smelled a bit yeasty when we first opened the package. The taste of chocolate was also really light, marbled delicately into the bread itself. All in all I must say.. the Japanese really know how to make a good yeast bread!

Sushi Garden

Today, I went out with my sister (Click here for her blog! TastyAffairs). After a long day of shopping for clothes, we were finally ready for some nice Japanese food to end the day off with. We decided to visit Sushi Garden, a place across from Metrotown. It was close, convenient, and apparently very good! (Or so they say from online reviews and other sources)

When we got there, it was already 6:30pm. The line-up outside was long, and inside the small restaurant, we had to leave our name down for them to call us when a table was available. After 20 minutes (Which we spent back in the mall and came back just in time for when my name was called), we were finally sat down and ready to order. I was in the mood for some sashimi while my sister wanted sushi rolls. So I ordered an assorted sashimi, and she ordered a "Crab ♥'s Papaya roll" and a house roll.

Here is a picture of the rolls:

- House roll in the back, and the crab/Papaya love roll in the front

- Assorted sashimi

I honestly did not expect the rolls to be that big! They were stuffed with fillings, and the crab/papaya combination was actually really really good~ Deep fried crab and fragrant papaya makes a good combination. The house roll was filled with cucumber, crab, fish roe, and salmon and tuna sashimi, as well as some avocado and tamago (egg). Talk about a filling meal!

As for the sashimi, it was my first time having tako (octopus), and I must say: Yum! The serving size was really big and it tasted quite fresh too.

Overall this was a very tasty meal. I found the service to be not so good though. The workers all look like they hate their jobs and they are quite understaffed. Affordable food and very generous servings, although I wish that it could have been more ambient with better service; although I guess if it were, it would have to be pricier (like Kawawa).

Photo of the Day

Wondering what the photo in my profile picture is? It's a Japanese snack food called ひよ子 (Hiyoko). It can only be bought in Japan as far as I know, so it's a popular tourist food that people bring back from Japan for family and friends.

Hiyoko Official Site

The centre consists of a sweet pale yellow coloured bean curd type of filling surrounded by a sweet soft shell. Not only is its appearance super adorable, but it tastes really good with milk too! 這一種點心應該是要配茶一起吃的,可是我喜歡喝牛奶。 有機會的話一定要嘗一嘗這可愛又好吃的日本菓子。

First Entry

This is my first entry on Blogger's blog. Before this, I was using another blog. I mainly started the blog because a close friend of mine recommended it.

Click here for the link: Old Blog

Anyway, I decided to switch to Blogger mainly because the other blog site was a Japan-based website so there was a language barrier. When they send me e-mails entirely in Japanese regarding their updates, I find that to be quite annoying indeed. Since what's the point of letting english-speaking users make English-based blogs if they are not even going to bother translating the update e-mails into English? Also, I cannot post pictures larger than 500KB... That made things extremely inconvenient for me. I love to accompany my posts with a few fun pictures every once in a while! Although I have to admit, that other blog has a lot more layouts to choose from; all of them being extremely cute too!
